NEWS RELEASE

BERRIEN COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION

MARCH 24, 2025

After a search that began in January, the Berrien County Board of Education has named Dr. Heath Heron as the finalist for the Superintendent of Berrien County Schools. Dr. Heron has 26 years of public education experience and is currently the Director of Human Resources for Camden County Schools. Before that, he served as a teacher, coach, and school leader in Camden. His initial teaching experience was in the Gwinnett County School System.

The naming of the finalist culminates several months of intense search activity by the Berrien County Board of Education. The Board employed search consultants Georgia Leadership Associates. With the help of the search firm, the position was advertised, 13 applications reviewed, candidates screened, and lengthy interviews conducted. With the naming of the finalist, the Board must now wait at least 14 days before taking an official vote to employ Dr. Heron.

Dr. Heron is a graduate of Kennesaw State University where he earned a B. S. degree in education. He holds a M. Ed. degree in Educational Leadership and a Doctor of Education degree in Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.

He has extensive experience as a school leader, serving as an assistant and deputy principal at the high school level and as a principal at the elementary and middle school level for 12 years. He is actively involved in the Camden County Chamber of Commerce and Rotary. He recently completed the Georgia School Superintendent's Association Planning, Budgeting, and Funding Institute and the Human Resources Institute.

Dr. Heron and his wife, Catherine, have two children: Hampton is a third-year pre-law student at the University of Georgia and Harper Mae is a first-year fashion merchandising student at the University of Georgia.

Mr. Keith Powell, Chair of the Board of Education, stated "We are so excited to have someone with the experience and ability of Dr. Heron to serve as our next superintendent. He is committed to Berrien County, has an outstanding record of successful leadership, and will also bring new ideas to our school system. We have had a deliberate and thorough search process, and I am appreciative of all the work by the members of the board."
